2011 Christmas Party

The KARC annual Christmas Party was held this year on Dec. 10th at the Domtar Cabin in Colonial Heights, TN.

Highlights of this year’s event:

Approximately 65 members, wives, significant others, and two grand kids made this year’s party. Santa Claus kept hanging around, impersonating Larry Prillhart. The Santa look-a-like insisted he was really Larry. Bone Fire Smokehouse provided some really good meat, and is officially now closed in Kingsport, moving the restaurant to Abingdon, VA. Nell and Daris were the first to arrive and last to leave as usual. They took the left- over meat to the Salvation Army, which fellow member Bill Hurd has done for the last several years. Bill wasn’t able to attend this year. Thanks to Daris and Nell for their extra efforts at Christmas each year. Mikel Smith came out early to help with the extravagant decorations, but had family obligations which kept him and Carol from attending. Jim Collier did his usual behind the scenes, helping with the decorating, and making the always required trip to Wal-Mart for all the supplies we didn’t have. Jay and Patsy Gillete weren’t able to make it, and we hope Jay’s health is improving. Good to see Tom Herron and Josephine with their grandson. Like many KARC members Tom has been inundated with family obligations. Lots of bench racing was going on at various locations around the room, with lots of invaluable information being exchanged. Good to see our newer members participate.  We had heard that Carl had taken a fall, but he and Sandy showed up with Carl showing no ill effects from the fall. Buckshot Elliott took time off from his Daytona, FL villa to come back and celebrate with the Po Folks. The food was great, the socializing was equally great, and we think everyone had a good time. Thanks to all who participated, and hope we are all around to do the same next year.

2012 Membership Dues

Treasurer Jim Collier, after a 10 year stint has given up the position and the torch has been passed to the lucky Keith Owens. Keith agreed to take the position at the December KARC meeting. Thanks Keith. There weren’t people standing in line to take the job. Jim reports that all the necessary paper work has been taken care of, and Keith is ready to take over. As his first official request, Keith would like to remind all KARC members that the 2012 dues are DUE. That is a big $20, if you have forgotten or are a new member. If you can do that before or after our regular meeting it will help keep down our normal amount of confusion.

Dale Klee Calendars

If you missed the December meeting, we had a number of the popular Dale Klee automotive calendars, to be delivered to our sponsors and each club member.  If you have a sponsor (persons or businesses on our flyer) and did not get a calendar for them, be sure to do so at the January meeting. Mike Smith procured those calendars for the KARC

Third Term Presidency

News Flash: Presiding President Dick Cartwright agrees to another year as KARC president, making him the first time ever 3rd  term President. Dick had already made KARC history as being the first member to serve as President for a second term.  Does this mean he is a Historical President?

After VP Don Hughes had left word that he would not be able to accept the President’s position for 2012 we were left in a bit of a pickle, and as all KARC members know, we don’t have lots of volunteers to take on a position. After a good bit of discussion, someone asked if Dick would agree to do it one more year, and Dick graciously complied.

Of course, the usual conspiracy theories abound, and there could be an investigation by the Election Committee (after we elect an Election Committee). Seriously,  thanks to Dick for stepping up and taking the position once more.

Members Machines & Gossip

Bruce Roberts has installed his new Fatman Fabrications tubular upper control arms on his 56 Chrysler Wagon.  Bruce reported at the Xmas party that he had aligned it, all except the toe in. Coincidentally if you are planning on stretching your upper control arms for more positive camber, I (Sid) over heard one of the Fatman’s guys state that 3/16th of an inch longer equates  to l degree more of positive camber. I think Bruce said that his were ½ inch longer, giving him plenty of tolerance.

We hear Jim Collier and Jim Bledsoe are talking of trading parts. Bledsoe with a 34 Dodge PU, and Collier has a 34 Plymouth Coupe. We’re talking small stuff, bumpers, emblems, light bulbs!!!

Jimmy Shipley’s 70’s Corvette is nearing completion in the paint shop, and Jimmy is already started work on his 55 Chevy 210.  Jimmy has purchased a nice 55 frame from another club member and is about ready to slip that jewel under his 55 body.

Anyone remember another club member buying a Fatman 55-57 Chassis after having already built a really nice one?  That could be the source of the chassis going under Jimmy’s 55.

Glen Armstrong has sold his Studellac. That was a 53 Studebaker coupe, with 50’s Caddy tail lights.

Frank Carr, after several months of no trading has reportedly bought an A Model, a local car.

Sid Vicars was able to accompany his friend Robert Harris and Dennis Isom to Ray Evernham Inc. Ray had purchased the 64 Chevelle late model race car that Sid and Robert had rejuvenated. A very good trip.  We got the full tour,by Ray himself.

If you have had trouble finding Z Chrome lately, the A-1 paint store in Greeneville has plenty and says he has no trouble getting it. The owner is also a good ole street rodder.

Dick Cartwright thought he had joined the ¼ tank club. That’s when the gas gauge shows ¼ but you are actually empty.  Ask Jim C. or Fred D. But with Dick’s 49 pickup the original gas tank seems to be the culprit, not an inaccurate gauge.

KARC member Tony Cable has had several health issues over the 2011 year, and has decided he needs to cut his car count down to a minimum.  At the Dec. meeting he told of a super nice 72 Buick Grand Sport that he needs to sell. One owner, tons of supporting documents, numbers matching, etc. It is a 350/350  Ram Air Induction, A/C, PS and PB.  It is a Super car. Tony is at 423-257-6157

KARC member Charlie Thomas, after having open heart surgery was able to attend the Dec. meeting and also make an appearance at  the Christmas party. Charlie says he is doing well.

Super Cruise/Wilderness Trail

Just a reminder, to all KARC members and the Car Show Committee.  It’s that time again to select the official cars for our Wilderness Trail Run. We need to get those selected and get that info and pictures to our club artist Jim Caswell.  We should probably select those cars at the January meeting.  As most KARC members know, we first select the members who have not had their car previously picked and second who has the oldest membership in the KARC. That’s pretty much the criteria.

Supplier Contact

At the January Club Meeting, Dick Cartwright announced that Dale Keesee, who is a Danchuck and Auto City Classic rep, has offered to extend discounts to club members who order items from these two suppliers through him. He can be reached at (423) 534-0897. Items can be viewed at these two web sites. www.danchuck.com  www.autocityclassic.com
