Wilderness Trail Run & Friday Cruise In at Kingsport Town Center

By the time you receive this N letter we will only have a few weeks until our annual Wilderness Trail Run and Friday Night Cruise In.  All of the people I (Sid) have talked to about the new location for the Friday Night Cruise In have sounded enthusiastic, and looking forward to more room and   more places to eat and shop.  That’s of course at the Kingsport Town Center, formerly the Fort Henry Mall.  We will have the corner across from Wal Greens pharmacy. Mike Smith has all the T.’s crossed and I’s dotted with the city of Kingsport for their support in both events. That’s getting us cones, barriers, and access to electricity downtown. Remember, the May meeting will be our last meeting before the show/ cruise in, so if at all possible try to attend that meeting.  If you can’t attend, then just show up at both events, there will be plenty of ways to help out. Thanks again to all our sponsors, and especially our major sponsors: Rainbow Motors, The Advance Auto Parts Stores, and The Kingsport Town Center.

Members Machines and Gossip

Maybe the biggest happening of KARC members at the Nats South was the sale of Mike Smith’s 36 DeSoto Coupe which Mike had owned for 15 years.

Not as big a surprise was the sale of Frank Carr’s 38 Chevy sedan, which Frank had owned for 15 weeks.  That’s a new record for Frank’s length of ownership.

Also at the NATS South someone throwing rotten tomatoes at the post 48 autos was seen repeatedly. No positive IDs were made but several officials were suspicious that the new pre 48 only organization’s President was to blame.  When you see Jim B. check his hands for red stains.!!

KARC member Tom Herron has been staying under the radar lately, but his Tub was spotted on Wadlow Gap Rd. with a for sale sign on it. Latest word is that it was sold to a Kingsport Doctor.  Tom says that his Merc Coupe is also for sale.  Maybe the International Truck is close to hitting the street!!

One of our members has reported losing his GPS a few months ago.  Some might say that’s ironic, but this member ,name withheld, has a different name for it.  It’s the classic CRS syndrome. No name, but he drives a Zephyr and a black 56 Ford.

Randy Bledsoe is reportedly building a 50 Chevy 4 dr. , which will sit on a 4 wheel Toyota frame with a 350 Chevy drive train.  Randy reports a kit to bolt the Chevy into this frame actually worked like it was supposed to. That’s nice to hear for a change.  Don’t know what the final machine will look like, but Randy will make it interesting, for sure.

Member Charlie Ball has had his second knee replacement, and is recuperating at home. Now there’s no denying he has a legitimate excuse for not finishing any of his hot rod projects.  He’ll be glad to show you his scar, just ask.

According to anonymous sources, Glen Armstrong traveled to the Charlotte Auto Fair in April, with his two brothers, and managed to spend only $45 after three days, with two nights lodging.  Never accuse Glen of not being frugal.

N.E. State’s automotive instructor Ernie Morelock told us at the April Cruise In, that for the last 2 years he had gotten 4 students (each year) into his program partly because of the cruise in , which is mostly KARC member cars.  We each received a letter of appreciation in the mail, which was nice of the school, and Ernie to do. There were 20-25 cars at this years high school senior day cruise in . Apparently some KARC members did not hear about the FREE pizza and drinks.  Thanks to Ernie for his hospitality, and letter of appreciation.

Jerry Collins has reported that he will have proof in hand of the lineage of his (?) 1948 pickup when he attends the inaugural VSRA run in September at the Borla Manufacturing Plant in Johnson, City. NSRA is buying it, but will the VSRA?  Rumors abound!!

NSRA Nats South

The NSRA Nats South was held at the Chilhowee Park in Knoxville, TN April 30th thru May 2nd. This was the first event for most of us to attend an event in which NSRA has used their floating 30 year rule for participation. I was unofficially told there were around 300 post 48 vehicles. I did not see a foreign car of any type, no mini trucks with stereos blasting, nor any trashy post 48 vehicles, except there was one 80’s Fairmont wagon that showed up apparently for the aggravation factor. The overall numbers of vehicles was down and there was a general feeling that the new rule had attributed to that.  Time will tell.  The foreboding sky and weather warnings may have had something to do with it.  Unofficially there were 2400+ registered rods/customs, etc. Jerry Collins was awarded one of the NSRA awards and was standing proud and proper on stage with his little red  (?) 48  Chevy  pickup.  Has anyone ever checked Jerrys VIN for year #? Seems like that’s the 2nd  time, but maybe not. Congrats to Jerry from all the KARC members.

Dick’s Spring Fling

Due to deadline issues with the KARC monthly News Letter, there will not be a complete report in this issue. We will assume lots of members showed up on May 9th and were entertained, wined, and dined by the host,  EX  Professor Dick Cartwright.  That’s EX Prof. pending his 2nd retirement. Thanks Dick, for opening your home, and inviting members of the KARC to your spring fling picnic.

NSRA Appreciation Day

On April 24th the NSRA annual appreciation day was held at the Ketron Middle School. With threatening weather the normally large crowd was whittled down to 40-50 rods/customs, etc. Keith Owens and Jim Collier had traveled to Knoxville the day before and retrieved our Wilderness Trail  official T Shirts., and were at the appreciation day bright and early, set up to sell T shirts and registrations for the upcoming run. The T shirts were outstanding as usual with the Cas, (Jim Caswell) doing the fine artwork. Autos displayed on the shirts are currently being praised and booed, depending on your club buddies perspective.  All in good fun, mind you. At the end of the day Keith Owens was presented the NSRA Merit Award.  Well deserved, and a long time coming. Congrats to Keith on the award.
